Breakthrough T1D has a bold plan for the future of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research in Canada. As better treatments unfold and the prospect of curing this disease is on the horizon, we remain committed to directing more resources towards innovative research across the country.

The generosity of our donors is what propels our mission forward – making every day better for those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) as we drive towards curing this disease. Your gift helps us fund breakthroughs in research, advocacy and support.
Funding comes from various sources include our Breakthrough T1D Walk, Breakthrough T1D Ride, special events, community fundraisers, and individual and corporate giving is stewarded to help improve the lives of the estimated 300,000 Canadians living with T1D today as we drive towards cures for tomorrow.
How dollars are spent:
Research
- $10.2M invested in the most promising T1D research
- 37 grants focused on cures for T1D so one day T1D can be a part of history
- 26 grants focused on improving lives of those living with T1D to make every day better
- 1138 Researchers and staff involved in funded projects, including 72 postdocs and 246 students, building the next generation of T1D researchers
- 44% of grants active in 2024 leveraged funding from additional sources, maximizing donor impact
- 59% of projects actively involved patients or the public in 2024, bringing their voice and perspective to the table to help shape research such as prioritizing research question(s).
Mental health strategy
- Added 166 new mental health providers to our Mental Health and Diabetes Directory to better reach and serve our community
- 450 mental health providers completed specialized training in diabetes and mental health to help close the gaps in care
- 118 healthcare providers received training on disordered eating and T1D to ensure more people can get the help they need
- Provided information and resources to over 500 people through our Mental Health and T1D Education Series
- 5 active community grants
Advocacy
- 2 appearances at House of Commons and Senate committee hearings
- 50 Kids for a Cure meetings with Members of Parliament highlighting the challenges of living with T1D and the need for continued research funding
- Access for All Campaign: Expanded coverage of of advanced glucose monitors and/or insulin pumps in 4 provinces and one territory
- 896 emails sent by advocates to provincial decision-makers to help improve public coverage of T1D devices
Community Support
- 1,123 newly diagnosed resource kits distributed to those in need
- 21 Community Events held bringing together 870 members of the T1D community
- Engaging 254 Ambassadors
- Leveraging the skills of 2400 Volunteers
- Working with 200 Healthcare provider partners to better reach our community
- 429 Connection Series registrants (a virtual meetup for adults affected by T1D) to build connections and conversations
