Breakthrough T1D has a bold plan for the future of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research in Canada. As better treatments unfold and the prospect of curing this disease is on the horizon, we remain committed to directing more resources towards innovative research across the country.

The generosity of our donors is what propels our mission forward – making every day better for those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) as we drive towards curing this disease. Your gift helps us fund breakthroughs in research, advocacy and support.

Funding comes from various sources include our Breakthrough T1D Walk, Breakthrough T1D Ride, special events, community fundraisers, and individual and corporate giving is stewarded to help improve the lives of the estimated 300,000 Canadians living with T1D today as we drive towards cures for tomorrow.

How dollars are spent:

 

Research

  • $9.9 M invested in the most promising  T1D research
  • 948 researchers and staff involved in our funded projects, including 68 postdocs and 167 students
  • 153 new scientific publications in 2025
  • 297 Engagement activities resulting from Breakthrough T1D grants active in Canada in 2025 (e.g. working groups, expert panels, presentations, media broadcasts)
  • 40% of grants active in 2025 leveraged funding from additional sources for an additional $22M to T1D research
  • 67% of our projects actively involved patients of the public in 2025 (e.g. to prioritize research question(s), design the research, develop applications for funding, or disseminate research findings.)
  • 30grants reported advancing research towards a cure for T1D.
  • 37 grants reported advancing research that aims to improve treatment, management, and/or quality of life for people with T1D.
  • 12 grants reported identifying or further characterizing a novel therapeutic pathway for T1D.

Mental health strategy

  • Directory listing of trained mental health providers (cumulative) = 223 providers, 53 French
  • Number of mental health providers who have completed training (cumulative) = 600+

Advocacy

  • Appeared before British Columbia’s Committee on Finance and Government Services
  • Access for All Campaign: Expanded coverage of devices in three provinces and territories; access to diabetes medications made free in four provinces/territories
  • 1,630 emails sent to candidates during federal election
