Breakthrough T1D Education Series
Our Breakthrough T1D Education Series is a free webinar series that hosts experts for discussions on a variety of topics important to the type 1 diabetes community.
Next event:
Please join us for a free informative discussion about diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and ketones and what they mean for type 1 diabetes (T1D) management
When: Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 8 p.m. EDT (French at 7 p.m.)
Where: Microsoft Teams (a link will be sent after registration)
Who: Presented by Dr. Bruce Perkins, Professor of Medicine at the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto and moderated by Breakthrough T1D.
This webinar will provide information on the causes and symptoms of ketones and the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) as part of T1D management.
Many people living with T1D believe that DKA is only an issue at the time of diagnosis of T1D. Studies suggest that many individuals with T1D do not consistently monitor their ketone levels, indicating a gap between understanding the risk and daily management behaviours. Additionally, there is often not consistent guidance on the role of ketone monitoring in diabetes management, both at the time of diagnosis and in ongoing care.
The event will offer a discussion about:
- Increased understanding of ketones and DKA for those living with T1D and caregivers/loved ones
- Improved earlier recognition and symptom recognition, as well as highlight the importance of monitoring ketones in T1D disease management
- Emerging devices that can help simplify ketone monitoring
This event is open to anyone, including healthcare professionals looking to learn more about DKA and ketones.
There will also be the opportunity for a question-and-answer period, but please note that no individual healthcare concerns can be addressed.
We hope to see you there.
