Vicky's Story

Vicky’s husband was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at 11 and faced devastating complications, passing away at 42. Two years ago, their son Logan was also diagnosed.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has forever changed my life – and I wanted to share my family’s story.

My husband was diagnosed with T1D when he was 11. Regrettably, he endured all of the complications that come with living with T1D. He lost his eyesight before he turned 30. He was not able to see me on our wedding day. He was not able to see our beautiful children on the days they were born.

His kidney’s failed at the age of 35 and he was put on at home dialysis twice a day. He eventually had his foot amputated. Sadly, he lost battle with this disease at the age of 42.

But our family’s journey with this disease did not end there…

“My heart sank, my stomach sank, and I don’t think I’ve slept a solid night since.”

Two years ago, our son Logan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

I knew all the signs and symptoms as I had experienced them so many times before. I remember the moment I tested his blood sugar – my heart sank, my stomach sank, and I don’t think I’ve slept a solid night since.

His diagnosis rocked me to my core.

But thanks to advancements in diabetes care and technology since my husband’s diagnosis, I am certain that Logan will have a healthy life. He is fortunate that he uses a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and he has an insulin pump to act as an external pancreas. He still has challenges in his life even with these devices, but we are constantly managing and altering to make sure he is feeling his best and is as healthy as possible.

There is a need to create more awareness and education around this disease.

Few people understand the risks and complications that come with a T1D diagnosis. There is also a need to raise money to continue to develop new technologies and possible cures.

I want to thank anyone who has taken part in a Breakthrough T1D event, volunteered a moment of their time, or donated to this cause. This is one of the most amazing things that anyone could ever do. Your continued support of Breakthrough T1D’s mission gives me hope for the future, hope for my son’s future, and hope that one day no one will have to live with this disease.

Thank you for everything you do to support Breakthrough T1D.
